Appreciation of Yuanmingyuan’s Architectural Craftsmanship from Global Perspectives: WSI Delegation’s Visit at the WorldSkills Museum’s Digital Exhibition

On July 16, 2025, a delegation led by Mark Callaghan, WorldSkills Museum Project Director, and Nuria Portland, Project Coordinator for the WorldSkills Museum visited the WorldSkills Museum in Shanghai. They enjoyed the delights of the thematic exhibition titled “Digital Exhibition of Yuanmingyuan, Reviving the Skills of Memory” with an impressive Virtual Reality (VR) journey that transported them back to the historical splendor of Yuanmingyuan. Following the visit, they exchanged valuable insights from unique global cultural perspectives.

The “Digital Exhibition of Yuanmingyuan: Reviving the Skills of Memory” debuted at the WorldSkills Museum on 3 July and will remain on display until 12 October. As an important part of the Museum’s “Perfection in Expertise” Exhibition Series, this Exhibition mainly features the digital revival of Yuanmingyuan’s architectural craftsmanship. One highlight is the “Back to Yuanmingyuan” VR experience, which, together with other interactive displays, allows visitors to enjoy the meticulously reconstructed scenes of Yuanmingyuan at its peak, and gain a vivid appreciation of the garden’s historical grandeur and architectural brilliance.

Such an immersive tour provided the delegation members with profound insights into Yuanmingyuan’s distinctive architectural planning and stylistic elements, leaving them deeply impressed by the extraordinary craftsmanship that defined ancient Chinese construction techniques.

Mark concluded that this uniquely immersive encounter with Chinese culture at the exhibition not only deepened his understanding of the Chinese history and craftmanship, but also revealed the transformative potential of digital technology in preserving cultural heritage. He highly appreciated the authenticity of the VR experience, noting how such technology-enhanced exhibitions will hold special appeal to young people, and can help visitors to understand diverse cultures better.

With a unique focus on “skills”, the WorldSkills Museum pioneered an innovative model in this exhibition for presenting and interpreting history and culture beyond traditional narratives. It has provided valuable experience for exhibition planning and content presenting, marking a significant step forward in the digitalization of themed museums.
